How to Decorate a Hat
Beyond protecting people from the sun, hats have been a fashion statement for centuries. Whether it's a baseball cap with your favorite team's logo or an elaborate hat to wear at the Kentucky Derby, the type of hat you wear says a lot about the wearer. When you decorate a hat, you can take your style to the next level and create a truly unique head covering.
Things You'll Need:
Glue
Hot glue gun
Material--leather, ribbon, flowers, jewels, silk, feathers, glitter
Step
1
Celebrate all of the places you have been when you decorate a hat with pins. You can collect pins from various states, countries, amusement parks, museums and other tourist attractions. You can put the pins in a time line order, alphabetical order or put pins together with complementary colors. As an added benefit, people will notice the places you have been and may strike up conversations about your travels and theirs.
Step
2
Use ribbons and flowers to personalize your hat. You will need to use the hot glue gun to make permanent fixtures to your hat. Place hot glue on the hat and then press the ribbon or flower into the hat. You can use a single flower or create a small floral arrangement with multiple colors to match several different outfits. If you have a straw hat, try weaving ribbon into the hat.
Step
3
Give your hat some "bling" when you decorate it with jewels, rhinestones, gold and silver. Determine the pattern for the stones on your hat and lay out the stones. Use a small drop of hot glue on the hat and press the stones into the glue. Try using a Bedazzler to attach all kinds of colored rhinestones to your hat without using glue.
Step
4
Decorate your western style hat with traditional leather or buckram. You can tie a strip of colored leather or buckram around the hat where the brim meets the crown. Tie the leather to the hat tight enough so that it won't fall off, but not so tight that it changes the shape of the hat. You can switch out the leather strips to match your outfit. For a permanent solution, hot glue the leather strip to the hat with a drop of glue on the front, back and on each side of the hat.
Step
5
Decorate your hat with glitter to reflect the light in many different colors. Add glue to the hat in virtually any pattern or smooth it out on the hat to cover a wide area. Pour the glitter onto the glue and let it settle in for a minute or two. Dump the excess glitter off the hat.
Tips & Warnings
Be careful when using a hot glue gun, especially if decorating a hat with kids. Not only is the glue toxic, but improper use can also lead to burns.
